Striped barber shop poles are a symbol that dates as far back as medieval times when barbers also served as surgeons and dentists.
While you can’t have an operation or get a cavity filled at Hall’s Barber Shop in Mauldin, it’s about as “old school” as you can get when it comes to haircuts.
In this day and age of being able to set up hair appointments through salon apps on smartphones, stepping into Hall’s is like stepping back to a simpler time.
There are no apps, no website and no appointments. Appointments would likely require a phone and Hall’s doesn’t have one of those either.
Having no business phone may be unheard of today, but probably wasn’t so uncommon when Odell Hall first opened the shop in 1938. Three generations of Hall barbers have followed, including Odell’s son Bascombe who cut hair for 58 years. No one outside the family has worked there since 1974.
